Ritlee's Contribution To Bush Feed Development In Southern Africa
For more than a decade, Ritlee has worked alongside farmers, livestock producers, agricultural consultants and laboratories to explore practical ways of converting bush, invasive trees and woody vegetation into emergency livestock feed.
During severe drought periods in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and parts of South Africa, farmers approached Ritlee looking for methods of utilising locally available bush resources to stretch feed supplies and reduce pressure on grazing lands. Through continuous machine development, farmer feedback and field testing, Ritlee helped develop practical processing solutions that allowed selected bush species to be chipped and ground into feed ingredients.
Our role has been to connect farmers with information, equipment, analyses, field experiences and practical knowledge so that producers do not need to start from scratch every time drought conditions occur. The result is one of the largest collections of bush-feed information, farmer experiences and laboratory reports available in Southern Africa.
From Bush Encroachment To Livestock Feed
Across Southern Africa, millions of hectares are affected by bush encroachment. Many of these species compete with grass, reduce grazing capacity and lower farm productivity. Ritlee has worked with farmers to explore how selected bush species can be harvested, chipped and ground into useful livestock feed ingredients while simultaneously improving land management.
Why Farmers Investigate Bush Feed
Farmers commonly explore bush-feed production to:
Reduce drought feeding costs.
Use locally available resources.
Maintain herd numbers during feed shortages.
Reduce pressure on grazing.
Utilise invasive bush species.
Improve veld management.
Convert waste vegetation into value.
